Meeting notice: The Greene County Genealogical Society will meet Saturday, Oct. 1 at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library.  Elaine Deluhery will share information about immigration records. When doing your family research, it’s important to know which port your ancestors might have come through. Also, be aware that there was different information required on the forms depending on the year.

Guests are always welcome. The meeting room is handicapped accessible.Nice to see a larger attendance last month and we were pleased to have the new Greene County Chamber of Commerce director present.  Come back again, Roccie Hill!

Family Bible: Some time ago, an old family Bible mysteriously showed up under our door – possibly via the book sale. We would like to make the public aware that we don’t have space to keep it. I will share a bit of the family information it contained and if it appears to be your family, you are welcome to retrieve it. The Bible had a copyright date of 1865.  Births:  Abijah Beach Eicher, 10 July 1837.  Margaret Ruth Eicher, born 16 August 1835.  Arminda Jane Eicher, b. 18 October 1860.  James Irvin Eicher, b. 3 April 1862.  A brief search of www.findagrave.com indicates that Abijah Eicher is buried in the Jefferson cemetery.  His obituary has been posted there (d. 1915).  There is additional information which we would be glad to share.

Reference library: The reference library is open again regular hours in the basement of the Jefferson public library:  Saturday 9 am – noon and Wednesday from 1 – 4 pm.  Here are a few more surnames of family histories which have been donated to our shelves: Eaton, Dillavou/Baggs, Eiterman, Elkins, Ferguson, Finch/Hammer, Ferris/Karreman, Finnegan, Fowler, Fates, Freese/Frease, Fulks/Davis, Fuller/Rowley, Gibson/Taylor, Glenn/Terrill, Gray, Gregory, Grief – all with Greene County connections.

I know there are descendants of Truman Davis, first white settler of Greene County, who are living in the area. If anyone has a compilation of those descendants, we would appreciate a copy. We frequently get requests from people to look up their Davis family history.

Stuff: Where does it come from? And why do I have so much of it?  When I moved here from E. Park after 30 years, I vowed I would never be a keeper of “stuff” again. Now, here I am trying to clear out our condo on S. Oak after 25 years – and there it is again. One such piece of paper was entitled “Life After Cooper”.  Where did it come from?  Why did I keep it??  I think it might be a page copied from the Cooper Newsletters compiled by Gladys Zabilka. Maybe Ken Kinsman used it as reference for a Historical Happenings column.  It is re: Betty Rippey who taught English at Cooper HS and her husband Bob Harris who helped build H & M Hatchery in Jefferson.  At the time it was compiled, they lived in Chandler, AZ.  Anybody interested?  I’ll keep it for 10 days then it’s going in the recycling sack.
